Situated next to the German border, what was once Bohemia, the beautiful spa resort of Marienbad (Marianske Lazne) perches on a high wooded valley. This famous resort pays homage to spa culture through its glorious Edwardian architecture, spa buildings and colonnades. When you see the elaborately decorated buildings and breathe the clear highland air, it is immediately clear why royalty, poets, scientists and thinker were attracted to this spa resort for generations.
Marienbad (Marianske Lazne) was founded at the beginning of the 19th century, but it was during the ‘golden age’ at the end of the century that the spa town witnessed an unprecedented boom. Prominent visitors included inventor Thomas Edison, writers Goethe, Mark Twain and N. V. Gogol, composers Strauss, Chopin and Wagner, and many other famous artists and celebrities from around the world. King Edward VII of England ranked among the most regular guests, visiting the town nine times in total; in 1904 he met here with the Austrian Emperor, Franz Joseph I. Guests today are even able to experience a treatment in his personal bath cabin, with its unique atmosphere and elaborate decoration.
